Bands (and Venues)Lee Press-On and the Nails: The LPN Website from HellA great San Francisco-area swing band led by the infamous Lee Press-On; they describe their music as "Jump-swing from Hell." Never have I heard a more rallying and powerful cover of "Hot For Teacher" or "Istanbul (Not Constantinople)." They're huge. They rock. You'll swing. You'll reap their righteous riffs. Be sure to bring your big pants, daddy-o. They played a great set at our wedding in 2003, and we are sad that their last show was Devil's Night (October 30), 2004. Lee now plays for a Los Angeles-based Oingo Boingo tribute band. You can find out more from his web log here. Heather Alexander Guitarist, fiddler and vocalist who plays unbridled Celtic music about love, magic, war, revenge, jealousy, high adventure, the Fey, and other family-oriented themes. "The magic never dies," she reminds us. A very energetic celtic folk band with a raven-haired Norwegian front man, a wicked fiddler, a guitarist, a drummer, and a bassist. Their shows are very enthralling, and you may feel compelled to dance. Not for the faint of heart. Lief Sorbye and Michael Mullen (the frontman and the fiddler, respectively) occasionally go about as the acoustic duo "Caliban". The Darkest Of The Hillside Thickets A thoroughly evil Canadian garage band that specializes in Lovecraftian themes. Their instrumentation is wicked and effective, thoughtful and mesmerizing, and they have great lyrics. Much Cthulhu, Yog-Sothoth, and Shoggoths dropping from a B-17 Bomber. Their style is creative and far-ranging, and they know how to use their toys. now known as The Vagabond Lovers Another wonderful San Francisco-area band (well actually, Oakland-area). They recently signed on with Monarch records, and Mattel made them change their name (I wonder why...). Patty Spiglanin leads this five-person Americana band with her intoxicating vocals; Evan Eustis plays bass, Michael Zapruder plays guitar, Dan Lashkoff plays a mean set of projectile drums, and Mike Connor plays most anything else, from keyboards to accordions. Their music is well-written, introspective and down-to-earth. Ye Gaskell Occasional Dance Society A Victorian-era semi-formal dress ball that comes around every two months. Takes place at the Scottish Rite Temple on Lake Merritt in Oakland. Two hours of ballroom dance lessons are offered before the afternoon of the ball. The next dance will be held Saturday, August 12th. The October dance will be a Victorian costume ball. | |

Humor and ComicsThe OnionThe Onion provides witty parodies of current events, the media genre and other satirical deliciousness, including such articles as: Red Meat - the Comic Strip, by Max Cannon The carnivorous comic strip. Well-done or rare, it's tasty and fortifying. Mmmmm, good. The Brunching Shuttlecocks Very amusing, semi-daily doses of humor, movie reviews, on-line toys and quizzes, as well as the weather in Hell. (The above are two of many on-line toys made by the Brunching Shuttlecocks) Here are some noteworthy features: Kevin and Kell On-line comic strip about a Kevin, a rabbit webhead, and Kell, a corporate wolfess -- their marriage, their children, his on-line grooming and dating service "Flea-Bay," and Herdthinners, Inc. - the all-predator corporation. The Parking Lot is Full Web Page A demented on-line comic strip in the tradition of "Bizarro" and "The Far Side," but not to be considered 'family entertainment.' Not at all. Approach with caution. Sometimes more strange than funny. Unfortunately, they're not writing any more, so all we can do is view the archives. Real Life Comics The adventures of a klatch of technophilic gamer-types. When do they find time to work? Dr. Fun Another on-line comic strip in the tradition of "The Far Side," but more scientifically bent. Sluggy Freelance Tamagothi Homepage! So cute! So dark! So Goth! Little bite-sized Goths in easy-to-carry Tomagotchi-style LCD cases! Is this where Goths go when they die? Amusing Tacky StuffJesus of the Week 2000It's back! Peter Gilstrap's collection of digitized Jesii and other Christian paraphernalia, originally seen on the Phoenix New Times website, where Peter had also brought to us "It Crawled From the Bins," a collection of strange, disturbing and wondrous albums that I now miss terribly. Disgruntled Housewife "Your guide to modern living & intersex relationships."
Self-Help with Lori, shameless parodies of internet ad banners, and other, less savory features. In fact, the whole site is pretty unsavory, frequently gross, and usually offensive, so be warned (wow... could they GET better publicity without paying?). Disturbing Auctions A frightening collection of Things That Should Not Be, but are nevertheless being auctioned on the Internet. |

Basic TransportationSan Francisco MuniHow to get around using San Francisco transit systems. San Francisco uses a system of light rails (giant steel land slugs), electrical and gas-powered buses, and historical trolleys. They have given up adhering to a fixed schedule and now have sort of a Heisenberg Uncertainty schedule. They also seem to believe that 3 trains an hour can be met when all three go by in the last or first 5 minutes of that hour. Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) How to get between San Francisco, Daly City, North Bay and East Bay. Normally on-time and dependable unless some Bay Area suicide decides he wants his soul to be wafted to his eternal reward upon a cloud of curses from a thousand morning commuters. Yes, I know I'm going to Hell. Additional BART information here. CalTrain The passenger train service between San Francisco, Sunnyvale and Gilroy. Usually dependable, although sometimes there is unavoidable commute-related schedule trauma. And people who mistakenly think that they can beat the train across the tracks (no, Officer, that vat of industrial-grade glue is for a publishing company I'm starting...). That's not funny. I'm going to Hell for that one, too. I'm sorry you had to read that. |
