Whine About the Machine

Complaining about the addictive nature of current electronic consumerism, to the tune of Rage Against the Machine's "No Shelter" (which is highly appropriate, methinks).

Incidentally, this song appeared in that stupid "Godzilla" movie, which the song quotes as having been "pure... filler, to keep your eyes off the real killer," so I don't know why the folks on the "Godzilla" team decided to put it on the soundtrack.

"Does it have Godzilla's name?"
"Yeah, but -"
"Let's put it in"
"But dude, it disses the movie and calls it a blatant ploy to keep the consumers distracted"
"Who cares, we'll already have their money."

The so-called discount -- a mis-count
Got a readout that's flashing "you're dumb"
Open the manual son
They got you thinking that
What you bought is what you needed
It will leave you feeling so defeated
New technology they're eager to sell
The thin line between entertainment and hell

The best buys are everywhere
There be no uprades here

You bought a brand new stereo for your car
Tried to install it yourself, but it was just too hard
Video erased, burned and charred
Can't even program your own VCR

Pentium Three, but you can't operate it
Sega Dreamcast – you couldn't play it
Manual filled with words you cannot spell
The thin line between entertainment and hell

There be no upgrades here (x4)
The best buys are everywhere

Brand new cel-phone ain't so swell
The market fell, they gotta sell
You buy their stuff with checks or cash
In a week it'll be in the trash
And why you buy this junk, who can tell?
The thin line between entertainment and hell

Your wife makes you keep up with the Jones
That is why you got so many phones
DVD Playa hooked to the forty-inch set
Was it on sale? You paid too much for it, I'd bet
CD Recorder, best that you could afford-ah
It got your tracks all outta order

Cinema set up in your home – all static
Old Nintendo – up in your attic
Manual filled with words you cannot spell
The thin line between entertainment and hell

Let's go to Best Buys, let's go to Best Buys
Circuit City, or to the Good Guys
Check out the sales, buy more stuff
But it's never enough

Consume
Fill every room
